Obituary of Kathleen H. Matthews
Please share a memory of Kathleen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Our beautiful mother, Kathleen (Kay) Haley Matthews, passed away peacefully on September 12, 2024, surrounded by her family. She died as she lived her life, with dignity, grace, and tremendous faith. She is predeceased by her husband, Robert S. Matthews, Sr., her sons, James H. Matthews, Robert S. Matthews, Jr., Anthony C. Matthews, Michael P. Matthews, her parents, Dr. and Mrs. James Haley, and her siblings, Patricia (Richard) Pender and James (Eileen) Haley. She is survived by her children, Joseph D. (Christina) Matthews, Richard K. Matthews, Nora M. (Robert) Flannery, Dennis J. (Hope) Matthews, Martin J. (Joann) Matthews, Tricia M. Matthews (Jeff Liccion), her daughter-in-law Virginia L. Matthews, 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, and her special Haley nieces and nephews, whom she loved as her own.
Born and raised in Binghamton, she spent her entire 94 years as a resident of the West side. A woman of great faith, she was a lifelong member of her beloved St. Thomas Aquinas Church. She was a proud graduate of Binghamton High School, where she was the salutatorian of the Class of 1948. Along the way, she formed lasting friendships that endured throughout her life.
Our family will deeply miss Kay's kind and generous spirit. She was the one everyone turned to in times of need, with an unmatched ability to forgive and a gift for making anyone in her presence feel like the most special person in the room. We are all better for having known and loved her.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the many guardian angels who cared for her, allowing her to remain in the comfort of her home. A special thanks to our brother Richard for his unwavering devotion over the years, and to her grandson Jack Ellis for his dedication to ensuring her comfort.
A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Highland Avenue, Binghamton, on Saturday, September 21st at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Kay's memory may be made to Mercy House of the Southern Tier, 212 N. McKinley Avenue, Endicott, NY 13760. The Mass will be livestreamed at www.sta-sp.org
