Obituary of Allan C. Cave

Allan C. Cave | Visit Guest Book Cave, Allan C. Vestal: Dr. Allan C. Cave, Sr, 87, of Vestal, was born July 24, 1924 and passed away November 9, 2011. He was born and raised in Binghamton, NY. He was the son of the late Sergil L. Cave Sr. and Margaret Westbrook Cave. Allan is survived by his wife of 61 years, Gwendolyn Scavella Cave; daughter, Hope Cave Jackson (Les), daughter, Robin Cave Alves, (Curtis) and son Allan C. Cave Jr. (Lisa Newlin). Allan was predeceased by daughter, Dana Marie Cave. He is survived by grandchildren, Dana Brundage, Anthony Battle Jr., Danny Brundage, Calin Cave, Taylor Alves, Maya Cave, and Allan C. Cave III. Allan was predeceased by his brothers, Dr. Sergil L. Cave Jr. and Donald D. Cave Sr. and sisters, Marjorie Cave Johnson and June Cave Hubbard. He is survived by his sister, Hope Cave Hawkins and numberous nieces, nephews and cousins. Allan attended school in the Binghamton School System and served as First Sergeant in the United States Army performing service in the European and Pacific Theaters. After honorable discharge, Allan returned to Binghamton to complete his high school education. He attended Lincoln University in Pennsylvania and transferred to Ithaca College where he received a Bachelors Degree in Physical Education in 1956 and a Masters degree in Physical Education in 1963. He went on to receive a Director of Health/Physical Education and Recreation Certificate from Ithaca College in 1965. In 1967, he received a School Guidance Counselor Certificate from the University of New York at Oneonta and in 1971 he was awarded a Certificate in School Administration from the University of Scranton. Dr. Allan Cave completed his PH. D. degree in Educational Administration from Syracuse University in 1980. Each and every college and university certificate and degree obtained by Allan were on a part time basis while working full time. His commutes to and from school were accompanied by his wife and children. Between 1956-1967, Allan was a Freshman Football Coach, J.V. and Varsity Basketball Coach, Varsity Track Coach, and Varsity Golf Coach for Binghamton (Central) High School. From 1957-1971, Allan was an Instructor and Supervisor at Binghamton Municipal Recreation Program; a High School and College Summer Employment Counselor for NYS Employment Service and Counselor and Associate Director for Upward Bound at Binghamton University. From 1959-1960, Allan was a Physical Education Teacher at West Junior High School and Binghamton High School. From 1965-1968, he was a Guidance Counselor at Binghamton Central. From 1968-1971, he was the Assistant Principal at Binghamton Central. From 1971-1981, he was Principal of MacArthur Elementary and Junior High School. Upon retirement from the Binghamton School System with 25 years of service, he became employed by IBM and retired as Director of Management Training in 1990. Allan's volunteer organizations and affiliations included, but were not limited to, Advisory Board and member of Binghamton Boys and Girls Club; Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity; Binghamton Amateur Radio Association; Binghamton Day Nursery Association; Binghamton Inter-racial Association; Binghamton Recreation Commission; Binghamton Rotary Club No. 64; Binghamton YMCA; Broome County Cancer Society; Broome County Council of Churches-Lay Committee; Broome County Council of Human Relations; Broome County Urban League; Broome County United Fund; Broome County Veterans' Memorial Arena-Chairman of the Board (1975-1976); Broome County Voices for Children; Buddy Camp Fund; Chimer, Lay Eucharistic Minister, Senior Warden and Superintendent of Sunday School for the Church of the Good Shepherd; Co-owner and Co-director of the Annual Binghamton Basketball Coaches Clinic; High Priest, Royal Arch Masons/Prince Hall Affiliation (Ithaca, NY); Past Master, Chenango Lodge No. 39; Prince Hall Affiliation (Binghamton, NY); Opportunities for Broome; Planned Parenthood Society; Shriner, Aleppo Temple 88; Prince Hall Affiliation (Syracuse, NY); 32nd Degree Mason; Utica Consistory; Prince Hall Affiliation (Utica, NY); Stop-DWI holiday basketball classic (committee on all tournament team and most valuable player); Trustee for 13 1/2 years and Trustee Emeritus for Broome Community College and Vestry for Christ Episcopal Church. Of the many honors bestowed upon Dr. Cave, none made him prouder than the night of January 30, 2009, when he was honored at Binghamton High School by the Binghamton City Schools Alumni Association. A large number of family, friends and former basketball players, students and co-workers paid tribute to Allan at a reception and a pre-game ceremony. President Barack Obama honored Allan's memory with a "Certificate by a grateful nation in recognition of devoted and selfless consecration to the service of our country in the Armed Forces of the United States" in 2012. A memorial service will be held at the J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main St., Binghamton, Saturday, April 21, at 1:00 PM. The Reverend John R. Martinichio will officiate. The family will receive friends at the McCormack Funeral Home Saturday, from 11:00 AM until the time of the service.
