His beloved family, his wife, Susan Norton, and his daughters, Alexandra and Katherine, survive John. His sisters, Anne Kalayjian (Jerry) of Binghamton and Martha Sullivan (Ginny) of Delaware, also survive as well as his brothers-in-law, Richard Hover (Maureen) and Charles Viggiano, and numerous nieces and nephews. His parents, John and Harriette Sullivan, as well as his sister, Margaret Viggiano, predeceased him. John also leaves behind so many good friends who enriched his life. During his illness there were weekly gatherings at John's home, called "Friday with Friends", which were full of laughs and good stories. Everyone's spirits, but mostly John's, were lifted by these special nights. John grew up on the West Side of Binghamton, attending Binghamton Central High School, were he was the catcher on the varsity baseball team. He graduated from Hamilton College with a degree in chemistry, continuing to play baseball and learning golf. John was an avid Yankees fan, taking his family to numerous games as well as following the local Triplets. Following college, he served in the United States Army serving at Walter Reed Hospital. For 45 years John was a successful stockbroker with Wells Fargo. John had wide-ranging interests from creative woodworking, reading, crossword puzzles, his colorful garden, and his beloved dogs, Montana, Jack, and Sophie. He stood up for his beliefs as exemplified by his actions in local politics. By his words and standards, he set a stellar example for his loving daughters. He was bright, articulate, and fun. John was a true friend and wonderful husband and father who will be remembered by so many people. The family will receive friends at the J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main St., Binghamton, Saturday from 2-5 p.m. John was a major proponent of the local dog park where he took his dogs so often. To honor this spirit, in lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Town of Union Dog Park Fund, 3111 E. Main St., Endwell, NY 13760. A celebration of his life will be held at a later time.
