Obituary of Irene S Whiting

Whiting, Irene S. Binghamton, NY & Naples, FL: Irene S. Whiting, 89, peacefully died on Sunday, August 7, 2011, in Rochester Hills, MI with her family at her side. She was born in Johnson City, NY on August 2, 1922 to the late Leo and Lulu Sullivan. Irene was predeceased by her husband, Hon. Kenneth P. Whiting Jr.; her sister, Kay Wesche; and her brothers, Phillip Sullivan, John Sullivan and Al Yeager. She was also predeceased by her infants, Thomas Joseph and Barbara Ann Whiting. Irene is survived by her children and their spouses, Kenneth and Phyllis Whiting, David and Leslie Whiting, Margaret and Gerald Glynn and John and Polly Whiting; as well as her grandchildren, Bryan, Brent and Tracy Whiting and Jeffrey, Timothy and Kellyn Glynn. Irene graduated from Johnson City High School in 1939 and thereafter worked for IBM during WWII until her marriage in 1946. For the next 40 years she happily served as mom and grandmother not only to her family but also to the extended Leroy Street family. She was always ready with a smile, comforting word, and maybe a sandwich and cold lemonade. Irene took pride in her work as a crossing guard at the corner of Laurel and Leroy Streets for 12 years. She provided not only friendly safety to 'her kids' by also great comfort to their parents. During the pre-cell phone era she was a trusted source of communication for all parents. Throughout her life Irene was an avid walker and golfer. She walked every morning and was able to play golf most every week until her early eighties. Irene always took pride in her car and continued to drive until three years ago. For many years she served as a reliable car service to and from Harbor Lakes Condo and the SW Florida airport. Irene also liked a good party and was very happy to serve as host for her family and friends. A private graveside service will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City, Saturday, August 13th. Arrangements are by J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, Inc. A funeral mass will be held at St. Ann's Church in Naples, FL at a later date.
