Obituary of Charles V. Costello

Charles V. Costello of Binghamton died Sunday afternoon, September 23, 2001 at Wilson Memorial Regional Medical Center. He was predeceased by his brother, John E. Costello. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Beverly West Costello, Binghamton; sister and brother-in-law, Rose Mary and Martin Reap, Binghamton; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Costello, Binghamton; nieces and nephews, Patty and James Corby, John and Kathleen Costello, Michael and Diane Costello, Robert and Susie Costello, Sheila and Ronald Potter, Sharon and Joseph Longobardi; cousins and many friends. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church, Binghamton, and the Holy Name Society and past member of the Parish Council. Charles was the retired Superintendent for the Binghamton Water Bureau and former owner of Costello's Lab, Inc. He served during World War II in the U.S. Army Medical Lab and spent a year in Monrovia, Liberia, West Africa, where he taught them how to operate the water filtration plant. He was a graduate of the University of Scranton in 1951, Past Exalted Ruler of Binghamton Elks B.P.O.E. #852. He published many articles on water works practices and was a member of the American Water Works Association, receiving their highest award for water works practices as well as the John M. Diven Award and the Fuller Award. He was recognized in Who's Who in Engineering in 1977 and 1980. Charles was a member of the Binghamton Lions Club and received the Lion of the Year Award, member of the Jewish Community Center, Broome County Health Department Advisory Award, Water Advisory Board for Binghamton, member of the Board of Directors of the Blind Work Association, member of the American Legion Post #80 and its Last Man's Club, V.F.W. Post 5642, Montrose, Pa. He was a delegate from People to People International American Water Works Group to Russia in 1989 and to China in 1992. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Peter T. Campon Council #206 and the 4th Degree Assembly. Charles was known as the "Minister of Moisture". Funeral services will be held at theJ. A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main St., Binghamton, Wednesday at 9 a.m., and at 9:30 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church, where a Funeral Mass will be offered. Burial will be in Vestal Hills Memorial Park.
