Obituary of Harold J. Donovan

Harold J. Donovan, 84, of Silver Lake,
Pa., died Thursday afternnon, January 10, 2002. He was born in Liberty
Township, Pa. on October 29, 1917 and was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Laura
Donovan Marron; and a sister, Frances Donlin. He is survived by his wife of 54
years, Catherine T. McDermott Donovan, Silver Lake, Pa.; his children, Cathleen
and Bruno Schickel, Dryden; Mother Agnes Donovan, S.V., New York City, James
and Carter Donovan, Boston, Mass., Jeremiah and Joan Donovan, Groton, Joseph
and Jinny Donovan, New York City, Teresa and Jerry Foley, Liverpool, Margaret
and Glenn Suttenfield, Richmond, Va.; 19 grandchildren; a brother and
sister-in-law, Richard and Frances Donovan, Montrose, Pa. Harold was a member
of St. Augustine's Church, Silver Lake, Pa., and was one of the first Directors
of the Parish Cemetery. He was a member of the Legion of Mary and the Perpetual
Adoration. He spent 42 years in the field of education. At age 19, he taught in
a one room School House and was then a sixth grade teacher at the Hallstead
Elementary School, Hallstead, Pa. In 1947 he graduated from Cornell University
in the field of Vocational Agriculture and taught Vocational Agriculture at the
Montrose High School for 17 years. For the last 20 years of his career, he was
Administrator of Career Awareness, Workstudy and other programs at the Vestal
Senior High School. At one time IBM hired 100 students under Vestal's work
study. At Silver Lake, Pa., Harold was one of the founders of the Edward L.
Rose Conservancy. Funeral services will held at theJ. A. McCormack Sons Funeral
Home, 141 Main St., Binghamton, Monday at 10 a.m. and at 11 a.m. at St.
Augustine's Church, Silver Lake, Pa., where a Funeral Mass will be offered.
Burial will be in St. Augustine's Cemetery in the spring. The family will
receive friends at the McCormack Funeral Home, Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. In lieu
of flowers, expressions of sympathy in memory of Harold may be made to Sisters
of Life, 586 McLean Ave., Yonkers, N.Y. 10704, or the Mary Laura Donovan Marron
Scholarship Trust Fund, c/o Seton Catholic Central High School, 70 Seminary
Ave., Binghamton, N.Y.
