Obituary of Helen S. Coutant

Helen Stack Coutant, age 75, of Vestal passed away on March 17, 2015. She was predeceased by her parents, Leonard and Helen Statkewicz. She is survived by her devoted husband of 48 years, Robert; her children, Amy (Avie) Stone, Stephen (Theresa) Coutant and David Coutant; and her grandchildren, who will greatly miss their Nana, Madeleine and Harrison Coutant and Matthew and Kailah Stone. Helen attended St. Francis College, received her B.A. degree from Temple University and earned her LL.B. degree from Dickinson School of Law, Carlisle, PA. In addition to her association with local law firms, she enjoyed her service as Staff Attorney with the Binghamton Urban Renewal Agency and as NYS Assistant Attorney General. Helen served on the Boards of Directors of Binghamton General Hospital and United Health Services and had the distinction of serving as the first General Counsel for UHS. Her career also included service as principle law clerk to several judges. Helen had the distinction of being a member and chairperson of the Committee on Character and Fitness for the Sixth Judicial District. She was a member of the Broome County Bar Association and had served on the Boards of Directors of Community College Foundation, Inc. and Bishop Harrison Foundation, Inc. Helen was a sweet and gentle lady, greatly loved by her friends and family, liked and respected by her colleagues. Her marvelous sense of humor and quick wit were a delight. Helen and her husband enjoyed golf but never rose above duffer level. Their true passion was foreign travel, visiting over 60 countries over the years and savoring each as the best. The family wishes to thank the staff of Emeritus at Woodland Place for their warm and professional care throughout her stay. A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Highland Avenue, Binghamton Saturday at 9:30 a.m. Entombment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. The family will receive friends at the J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main Street, Binghamton Friday from 4-6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in memory of Helen may be made to Alzheimer's Association, Central NY Chapter, 401 Hayes Avenue, Endicott, NY 13760 or Parkinson's Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, NY 10018.
