Obituary of George William Delamar

George William Delamar, better known as Bill, was born November 15, 1915 in Westbury, Long Island, New York to the late Osceola and Mary Delamar. He was the youngest of five (5) children all who preceded him In death; Penelope Sampson, Osceola Delamar, Marie Bradley, Ruth Hendricks. A native of Westbury, New York, Bill was baptized at an early age in the family's local church, Westbury A.M,E, Zion Church, and attended the local public schools, graduating from Westbury High School June 1933, After securing a job as a temporary clerk for the City of New York's Department of Sanitation he moved to New York City in 1935 where he attended City College to become a chemical engineer. Unable to find a position in that field because of his race In 1938 he was selected for a job In the Railway Mail Branch of the United States Post Office and put his education on hold several years. He graduated from City College in 1946 with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in accounting. He later attended the University of Virginia, taking various graduate Management Training courses. Beginning in 1938 Bill worked with the Railway Mall in Albany, Buffalo, New York City, and Hoboken and Weehawken, NJ. In 1941 he began to work on the trains in the Railway Post Offices, working between New York City and Washington, DC and Albany, NY and Montreal, Canada. He was appointed Supervisor in 1948 and in 1957 he was transferred to Long Island City. In 1966 Bill was promoted to Assistant Station Superintendent at the College Station of the New York City Post Office, In 1967 he was appointed as Postal Service Officer for the New York Region and in 1971 he was reassigned to Binghamton. When the former Binghamton Post Master retired Bill Delamar was selected to replace him as Officer-in-Charge. In October 1973, he was confirmed as Postmaster/Sectional Center Manager putting him directly in charge of 500 employees in the Binghamton facility. He was also administratively responsible for 2,500 employees in 176 Post Offices stretching from Hancock to Wellsville, including Elmira and Ithaca. After 42 years, 6 months of creditable service for the Post Office Bill Delamar retired June, 1980. However, not ready to slow down he continued his work as a part-time Public Accountant and then in 1990 began working part-time at Broome Community College Binghamton, New York until 1995. Bill Delamar married Ruby Olga Hinkson (deceased) of Amityville, long Island, New York in 1939 and raised two (2) children, George William (Sylvia) of Albany, NY and Marcia Lynn Griffin (Larry) of Southfiled, MI. After 22 years of marriage Ruby passed away in 1960. On November 1, 1969 Bill married Mary Agnes Sinclair of Brooklyn, New York, a widow with three (3) children: Rev. lona Agnes Sinclair Blackmon and Wanda Sinclair of Brooklyn, NY and Andre Sinclair of Albany, NY. For 45 years Mary and Bill made their home In the Glen Castle area of Binghamton. George William Delamar made his transition quietly Sunday morning November 30, 2014. He leaves to cherish his memory and carryon his legacy his devoted wife, Mary; the five children, 17 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great grandchildren; a caring friend who was like a son, Ike Studgeon (Connie) and host of other relatives and friends. He was truly loved and will be missed! Memorial services will be held at Trinity AME Zion Church, 203 Oak St, Binghamton Saturday at 1pm. Rev. Dr. Agnes Blackmon will officiate. The family will receive friends at Trinity AME Zion Church Saturday from 12 noon until 1pm
