Obituary of Richard C. Stevens

Dr. Richard Crosby Stevens, M.D. ("Doc") died November 17, 2014 at Binghamton General Hospital, the same hospital, then called City Hospital, where he began his Medical Residency in Internal Medicine in 1951. He was 89 years old. Richard was preceded in death by his father Dr. Orrie G. Stevens; his mother, Mary Kelly Stevens (Allaben); brother, Emerson W. Stevens; and daughter, Anne C. Stevens. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Eileen Poe Stevens; his three daughters, Deborah S. Matsushima (Vestal, NY) and husband Richard, Mary E. Stevens (Houston, TX) and partner Ruby J. Andrews, and B. Kelly Stevens (Johnson City, NY). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Michael S. Matsushima (Vestal, NY), Andrew P. Matsushima (Vestal, NY) and Katherine A. Matsushima (San Francisco, CA) and fianc Daniel A. Nicholls. Dick was born on July 20, 1925 in Stamford, NY. He graduated from Stamford Central School in 1943 at the age of 16 to attend Colgate University, from which he graduated early and with honors. Richard attended medical school at The Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital of Philadelphia, graduating with a degree in Internal Medicine in 1948. He did his internship in Cleveland, OH. A Naval veteran of the Korean War, he was a Lieutenant in the Medical Corps. An exemplary diagnostician, he practiced medicine in Binghamton for over 50 years, and after retirement was the physician for the Binghamton City School District. Dick was a member of the American Medical Association, the New York State Medical Society, and the Broome County Medical Society for many years. Dick and Eileen enjoyed traveling extensively throughout the U.S. and many parts of the world, and their favorite was a cruise on the Danube River. However, his true passion was golf. As a member of Endwell Greens Golf Club, his triumph was the hole-in-one he shot on the 10th hole November 16, 1987. His peers, patients, friends, and family remember him as an honorable man, humorous and giving, extremely well-read, and one who truly loved helping people. A Memorial Mass will be offered at St. Vincent DePaul Blessed Sacrament Church, Clubhouse Road, Vestal Saturday at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Vestal Hills Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at St. Vincent DePaul Blessed Sacrament Church Saturday from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please send expressions of sympathy in memory of Dick to the Dr. Garabed A. Fattal Community Free Clinic, c/o Upstate Medical-Binghamton Campus, 425 Robinson Street, Binghamton, NY 13904, or a charity of your choice.
