Obituary of Roy F. Shaul

M. Sgt. Roy (Reds) F. Shaul, USMC Retired, transferred to St. Peter's command on July 21, 2014 surrounded by his family, including his beloved wife, Kaori (Kei). He was predeceased by his brothers, Ernie Shaul and Faris and George Kenien; his sister, Nellie Spitz; sister-in-law, Avis Shaul; and brothers-in-law, Douglas Spitz, Isao Shimizu and Shogi Yanagihara. He is survived by Kaori (Shimizu), his wife of nearly 60 years; and children, Pat (Shaul) and Rick Musa, Candor, Pat and Dempie Shaul, Lawrenceville, GA, Michael and Jum Shaul, Marietta, GA, Matt and Kathy Shaul, Kennesaw, GA, Kelly Shaul, San Diego, CA, Peg (Shaul) and Chris Buck, Morristown, NJ, and Daniel Shaul, Washington, DC. He is also survived by his sisters, Sharon Galli, Marie Foster and Essie Climer; sisters-in-law, Nan Kenien, Esther Kenien and Miuki Yanagihara; and brothers-in-law, Lou Galli, Al Climer and Takashi Shimizu; as well as 12 grandchildren, their spouses, three great-grandchildren, and numerous nephews and nieces. Reds was born on the Marine Corps' birthday in 1928 - November 10th. He enlisted in the Corps in August 1948, and after boot camp at Parris Island, SC, attended Radio Technician School at Great Lakes, IL and Camp Del Mar, CA. He joined the 3rd Bn., 6th Marines, which was re-designated as 3rd Bn., 7th Marines, just prior to their Mediterranean cruise in May 1950 where they sailed through the Suez Canal, the Red Sea and Indian Ocean to Japan in August/September 1950. He landed in Korea in September 1950, taking part in all of 3/7's operations until 1951. In the bitterly cold winter of 1950, he participated in the complete Chosin Reservoir operation, now considered one of the greatest battles in military history. Returning to the States in September 1951, he completed his circumnavigation of the globe. During his 20 years of active duty, Reds served with the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th Divisions and the 1st Marine Air Wing, four tours of instructor duty, and two tours of independent duty. His service included three more tours of the Orient, the last being from January 1967 to February 1968 in Vietnam. He met his dear Kei while stationed in Japan. They married on July 23, 1955 in the Catholic missionary church in Gifu, Japan. Reds credits the Blessed Virgin Mary, to whom he had a lifelong devotion, for all the many blessings in his life and for protecting him during his two combat tours. Retiring from the Marine Corps in 1968, Reds worked 21 years for the IBM Corp. in printed circuit development engineering. He was instrumental in the development of a digital interface for imputing design date of non-standard printed circuit cards to manufacturing. He also developed a method of verifying the wire data on large multilayer printed circuit boards. He retired from IBM as a Staff Systems Analyst on December 31, 1990. He was a member of SS. Cyril & Methodius Church, Binghamton. A Funeral Mass will be offered at SS. Cyril & Methodius Church, Binghamton, Friday at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA. The family will receive friends at the J.A.
