Nicholas J. "Nick" Markatos, 88 of Pt. Crane died Friday morning May 9th 2014. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Shirley Markatos, Pt. Crane; his daughter and son-in-law, Frosene "Nene" and Craig Canning, Fla; grandson Nicholas and Danielle Arnold, Fla; great-grandchildren, Sara, Nicholas and Isabella Arnold; step-children, Brian Whitman, Steven Whitman; special aunt Isabel Michaels, Cliffside Park, NJ. He was a member of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, Vestal. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II serving on the USS Cepheus. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 478 and American Legion Post 1227. He was a retired 37 year member of the Binghamton Police Department and worked at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena as Head of Security. Nick was the only Greek Policeman to be the starter of the St. Patrick's Day Parade and was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He was a lifetime member of the Binghamton YMCA Athletic Center and a diehard NY Yankees Fan. Nick was well known for singing at his favorite restaurant, Cortese Restaurant, "God Bless America!" Funeral services will be held at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 4121 O'Hara Rd. Vestal, Tuesday at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Riverhurst Cemetery, Endwell. The family will receive friends at the J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home. 141 Main Street, Binghamton Monday from 4-7 p.m. Trisagion Service will be Monday at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in memory of Nick may be made to the Binghamton YMCA 61 Susquehanna Street, Binghamton, NY 13901 or the Binghamton Police Athletic League, 38 Hawley Street Binghamton, NY 13901
