Obituary of Marie S. Thomas

Marie S. Thomas, 60, of Binghamton, after courageously surviving 30 years with cancer, passed away peacefully and gracefully in her home on April 9, 2014, surrounded by her family and their love. To know Marie was to love Marie AND to be loved. She is predeceased by her parents, Myrtle and William Stegman and her in-laws, Dorothy and William Thomas. She is survived by her loving husband of 36 years, Dan "Chief' Thomas; son and daughter-in-law, Brett (Amber) Thomas of New York, NY; daughter, Marisa Thompson of Binghamton; and three beautiful grandchildren, Liam, Bella, and Rocky. She will be missed by her brothers, Michael (Jeanne) Stegman of Shoreham, NY, and Bill (Joyce) Stegman of East Setauket, NY; her four brothers-in-law and their wonderful families; her SUNY girls; her best friends Clare (Tony) Stenta and Penny Sullivan; and Randy Thompson, Holly Koch, and the Binghamton Fire Department. Marie was an active volunteer and leader in the community and involved in many organizations, particularly The American Cancer Society, The Broome Leadership Institute, and Lourdes Hospice. She was energized by helping others and did it effortlessly. In her "spare time," Marie enjoyed over 25 years as a successful Project Manager at IBM and Lockheed Martin, accumulating countless lasting friendships along the
way. Marie loved life and treasured every laugh, every hug, and every minute spent simply sharing time with friends and family. Marie's strength was as inspiring as her smile was contagious. In addition to all of the love and prayers she received throughout her life, Marie was fortunate and blessed to receive the medical care and friendship of Dr. S. Spivak, Dr. M. Yalamanchili, and a long list of other compassionate doctors and unforgettable nurses and aides. A Funeral mass will be offered at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Highland Avenue, Binghamton Monday at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. The family will receive friends at the J.A.McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main Street, Binghamton Sunday from 2-5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Marie's name be made to the American Cancer Society, 13 Beech Street, Johnson City,NY 13790 or ST. Jude Children's Research Hospital, PO Box 50, Memphis ,Tn 38101-9929 both organizations that she was very passionate about.
