Mary Marguerite DeMaio
1953-1974
Mary Marguerite DeMaio, 70, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2024, at her home in Endicott, NY. She was predeceased by her loving parents Vincent A. (Jim) and Ann Regan DeMaio; her grandparents; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. She is survived by her three sisters Maureen DeMaio (Joe Sholder), Annmarie Giancola (Rick), and Cristine DeMaio (Dan Byrne); her niece Kathryn Giancola and nephew Ricky Giancola (Melissa); great-nephews Harry and George Giancola; her aunt Rosemary DeMaio Fariel; many cousins and friends; and countless committed, compassionate, and loving OPWDD caregivers.
Despite many disabilities, including a lack of verbal language, Mary had no trouble communicating her love for people. Her hugs were uninhibited. She was funny and playful and had a knack for making others laugh, bringing joy and humor into the lives of those who knew her. She was exceptionally musical and would move to the rhythm of any music with a beat.
Mary Marguerite was born on May 9, 1953, in Scranton, PA, and moved with her family to Binghamton in 1954. She later lived in a number of state operated facilities including the Broome Developmental Center beginning in 1975; and in two State Operated Individualized Residential Alternatives – on Lincoln Street in Ithaca, NY (2010-23) and, since February 2023, on Taft Avenue in Endicott, NY.
The family wishes to thank all the loving and compassionate staff and other professionals, in Binghamton, Ithaca, and Endicott, who cared for Mary Marguerite over many years. They brought out the very best in her and ensured a life that was happy and meaningful. They are unsung heroes whose dedication, compassion, and commitment to the developmentally disabled are deeply appreciated.
Marguerite's zest for life and ability to bring joy to those around her will be deeply missed. Her memory will forever be cherished by her loved ones and those whose lives she touched.
The family will notify loved ones should a future service be scheduled.
