I remember Mr Hartigan as a ninth grade Latin teacher. He told us that for the first time in our lives we would have to work. At first I did poorly but learned to succeed by memorizing everything, a formula that worked in Binghamton schools. I learned to love Latin and the romance languages, studying them throughout my college years. Like Dick Hartigan I taught for a few years and chose another career. Teaching is a difficult and often thankless task. One more memory I retain was his love for the opera which has become a life-long interest for me. So in the end, teachers do often have an effect on their charges, of which they are not aware. In memoriam, Mr Hartigan. Richard Hefft.
