Obituary of Dean P. Veres
Please share a memory of Dean to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Dean Palmer Veres, 89, formerly of Endicott, New York, died peacefully Monday, November 20, at his home in Port St. Lucie, Florida.
He was born June 6, 1934 in Cleveland, Ohio, son of the late Michael N. Veres and Marie Moore Veres.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Helen Creagh Veres; his son and daughter-in-law Robert and Suzanne Veres of Los Gatos, California and grandchildren Conor and Alison; sister-in-law Margaret Malloy of Binghamton; nieces Lynne Talbot and Maureen Malloy; nephews Richard and Shawn Veres; and many cousins and good friends.
He is preceded in death by his daughter, Margaret "Marnie" Veres; brother Michael M. Veres; and brother-in-law Thomas Malloy.
When he was young, Dean's family moved to Gilbertsville, New York where he spent most of his childhood - he treasured his youthful adventures there with his good friend Phil Seaman. He was a graduate of The Manlius School, Manlius, and Binghamton University. He also served in the United States Army, stationed in Panama in the 1950s. During his graduate studies he did archeological work including substantial digs in Bordeaux, France and Utah, and spent a long career working in Binghamton University's computer center.
He was a man of many interests and hobbies - he was a prolific stamp collector, avid golfer, and bowled for decades in leagues at Midway Lanes in Vestal and Ideal Lanes in Endicott. He loved watching most sports - loyal to his birth city, he was a long-suffering fan of the Cleveland Indians/Guardians and Cleveland Browns, and he never missed an opportunity to cheer on his son Rob from the sidelines. An ardent traveler, Dean explored much of the United States and many countries around the world. For many years he enjoyed an annual summer retreat with family to the shore in Cape May, New Jersey, and in more recent times he relished traveling to California to visit his son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren, and touring the nearby winemaking regions with Helen.
Dean was a voracious reader and had an encyclopedic memory spanning numerous subjects, from military aircraft to classic automobiles to world history to baseball players and statistics - he leveraged this with great success to dominate crossword puzzles and the competition during trivia nights at local watering holes. His mind possessed perhaps the deepest catalog of "dad jokes" the world has known, and he was ever-ready with the perfect quip, pun, or one-liner to make the room groan.
