Mark, and later after he met Annie, was always such a pleasure to talking with at Donovan family gatherings.
I remember when he told me how he used to stop frequently at my mom’s house, his Aunt Helen, on his way home from grammar school. She would give him a snack and they would talk about his day. I was unaware of these as I had been grown and living elsewhere. I thought his telling me of this and his affection for my mother was so nice.

About 16 years ago I started stopping at the Beef on my way home from work about once a week. I'd sit at the bar and eat dinner. It is here that I met Mark and Annie Donovan. I would see them on a regular basis and we soon became friends.
Years later it was sitting at this very place that Annie and Mark talked to me about joining the BC Celtic Pipes and Drums band. I told Annie that I might be interested in playing drums. Two weeks later, I ran into Dunno again and he said ""Annie says you want to join the band! You have to come to practice on Tuesday". He was so enthusiastic about it that I showed up that next Tuesday. From that point on, I was taught how to play the snare drum and joined the band. Mark was always so positive and encouraging.
I loved playing in the band with Dunno and having him lead us as our Drum Major. I will forever remember our trip to Scotland where Dunno lead our band to play at Ceres and The Mound. Such amazing memories. Dunno will be missed by us all.
My condolences to the entire Donovan family.

Mark was a great cook. When Annie came to work in Family Court Mark would send her to work with his homemade soup. He often sent enough for everybody. We loved both Annie and Mark. May Dunno rest in peace.

It is sad to hear of Mark's passing. I hope his relief from suffering is a comfort to his loved ones. He was a true character, and a threat to bass drums everywhere. You never had to ask twice what he thought. He will definitely be missed - but also fondly remembered.

What a great friend, such a huge loss to the community and the band. We really enjoyed seeing Mark on pub tour days, he played at our wedding in 2016. The last conversation we had was on parade day 2019 at the pub and we told him we were expecting bri, we then he told me I would make a good Drum major because I knew the tunes. He then gave me his challenge coin. He will definitely be missed, I'm sure gonna miss seeing his smiling face around and just enjoying his conversations.

I came to know Dunno years ago - as my brother John and I joined in the shenanigans at Ray Kettle's annual "Guys Weekend" every winter at our camps at Sandy Pond.
Mark was always the center of attention as he regaled us with stories, limerics and jokes. I always thought he may've missed his calling in life as he certainly could have become a stand up comic.
At his core - yes, he could loud and brash...but he possessed a gentle soul and a spirit of kindfulness that belied that boisterousness.
My memory of Mark that comes to mind was just such an occasion.
My family had experienced a tragedy - and Mark and Annie appeared at our door after services. No words were spoken as he walked into a crowded room in our home.
With tears in his eyes, Dunno bear hugged me and lifted me off the ground (no small task - if you know me) and said "I love you, brother"... and we wept.
He will never know how that moment lifted me up, literally and figuratively.
I'm reliving this memory because that is how I will remember him...as a gentle giant with a kind and compassionate heart.
...and as the worlds largest Leprechaun..!
I know from talking to his many childhood friends over the years that he was a fierce defender of those relationships...and good to know we now have (sadly) yet another advocate on the other side.
Well done, good and faithful servant...fair winds and following seas to you - Sail on..!
And Cheers!

Dunno was such a wonderful person. His sense of humor and laughter were infectious. His stories were riveting - never boring! My daughter, Lindsey, and I have many memories from being in the band together. His first parade as drum major was our very first band gig. He and Annie helped us adjust our uniforms as it's not easy knowing the first time how it all goes together! We were lucky enough to create lasting memories together on our trip to Scotland. And he and Annie made Lindsey's HS graduation quite memorable. We've missed him as our drum major but always looked forward to seeing him from time to time when we were performing. Every now and then he would lead us in a tune like old times. A giant hole has been left in all of our hearts. We love you Dunno! Love, Karen Oliva

We grew up together in the neighborhood. The Kettles, Dickersons, Macleans, Heckman's... At 13 we moved , Across the tracks as Dunno would call it, but really it was only about a mile away across Riverside Drive. But our days of ice skating and sledding down Rec Park hills ended. Kinda lost touch with the old neighborhood kids I grew up with. About 40 years later Mark Donovan came into my Life again in the form of a Pipe Band musician. I can still remember marching up and down the hallways of Seton Catholic Central trying to get our steps to match. Mark and his amazing memory remembered the Webster Family from 129 Laurel Ave and brought it altogether one night. We reunited our Friendship and became Brothers in the B.C.Celtic Pipes & Drums. We had so many great performances and parades, Dunno was the mighty Bass drummer that held us altogether, for about 10 years our Friendship grew. And then I got the call. I had to see my friend one last time and hold his hand, and tell him Wallyjo' was here, and it was gonna be alright. Mark passed about an hour later. But it made me think that, that was Life at Full Circle. I shall Cherish the memories we made as kids and the ones we made as Brothers in a Pipe & Drum Band...❤️
