Obituary of William P. Metzar
Please share a memory of William to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
William Paul Metzar (Bill) fell asleep in the Lord on February 28, 2023. He was predeceased by his parents John and Catherine Metzar, his brother Edward Metzar, and his two doxies Schätze and Harvey. He is survived by his wife Dianne (Martyak), his sons Andrew (Lindsay) and Nicholas (Leslie), his granddaughters Eleanor and Jacqueline, his niece Jean (Debbie) and his nephew Tom (Jerry).
Bill was graduated from Binghamton High School in 1964 and earned a degree in Chemical Technology from Broome Technical Community College in 1966. He was class valedictorian at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in 1969. He accepted a fellowship from the US Department of Health, Education and Welfare under the National Defense Education Act (NDEA), and received a Master of Science degree. He continued his education at the School of Advanced Technology, which later became the Watson College of Engineering, Binghamton University SUNY. Bill was hired by Broome Community College in 1980, where he became a Professor of Chemistry and was granted Emeritus status after retirement.
Bill was fascinated by how chemistry and life experiences were intertwined. He enjoyed experimenting with the science of making apple pie, the use of yeast in dough, and food additives. Using his love of puns, he proclaimed his tofu meatballs a matter of one's taste! Music was also an important part of Bill's life. He studied piano, took voice lessons, and enjoyed attending the opera and Broadway musicals. Bill served as Cantor and Choir Director of Holy Spirit Byzantine Catholic Church for many years. He is now a singing tenor in Heaven. Bill wanted to leave us with Beethoven's last words: "Comedia finita est."
Bill's family would like to thank the nursing staff at Lourdes Hospital, Ross 1, and the entire staff at Mercy House for the compassionate care given to Bill. You are all angels of mercy! Family and friends will be received at the J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main St., Binghamton, NY 13905, on Friday, March 24 from 4:00-7:00pm. Father Roman Isayskyy will offer a Panachida (prayer service) at 6:30pm. A Funeral Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at Holy Spirit Byzantine Catholic Church on Saturday, March 25, at 10:00am. Burial services will take place at Holy Spirit Cemetery, Upper Front Street, Binghamton, following the liturgical service. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Holy Spirit Byzantine Catholic Church, 360 Clinton St., Binghamton, NY 13905; Mercy House, 212 North McKinley Ave., Endicott, NY 13760; or to an animal care shelter in your area. May God grant Bill blessed repose and eternal memory. Vicnaja Jemu Pamjat'.
