Obituary of Norman F. Mahoney

Norman ("Bud') Francis Joseph Mahoney, age 93, died peacefully at home on February 23, 2021. He is survived by Barbara V. Mahoney, his wife of sixty-four years, and their five children – Kathleen Mahoney (John Gura), Patricia Mahoney (James Zippilli), Teresa LoMonte (John LoMonte), Mary Mahoney, and Frank Mahoney (Debra Mahoney) – and two grandsons – Matthew John LoMonte and Nicholas Paul LoMonte. He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis J. Mahoney and Helena V. (Foley) Mahoney, and his older sister Jean (Mahoney) McCarthy. Bud was born on April 18, 1927, in Bronx, New York. At age two, his family moved to Beechhurst, Queens, New York. Bud enlisted in the Navy. Following basic training at Sampson, Seneca Lake, he was a Navy Medic attached to the Marine Corps in California, and waiting to ship out when World War II ended. In 1946, he returned home to Queens, earned a business degree at St. John's University (then on Schermerhorn Street in Brooklyn). Bud married Barbara (Greitz) on September 29, 1956. They moved to Floral Park, Long Island in 1968. Bud was a Teamster and worked for many years for Metro Fuels. He was a Little League baseball manager and active in the Boy Scouts. He also chaperoned dances at his daughters' all girl high school. Bud spent every Labor Day weekend at the Mahoney Family reunion in Brackney, Pennsylvania, and every Thanksgiving weekend hunting with his cousin, Gerard Mahoney, after deer season opened. In 1993, when Bud retired, Bud and Barbara moved up to Laurel Lake, where they resided until 2012. They then moved to Riverside Towers in Binghamton. Until recently, Bud maintained an active social life. He was a member of the Ancient Order of the Hibernians and the Bingo caller at Riverside Towers. He loved the Thursday night social hours, ice cream, and chicken and biscuit dinners. Bud was affectionately known as "Two Dollar Bud." A Funeral Mass will be offered at the Church of Saints John and Andrew, Vestal Avenue, Binghamton, Saturday at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Augustine's Cemetery, Silver Lake, PA in the spring. The family will receive friends at the J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, Friday from 4 to 6 p.m.
