Ray was a wonderful advocate for children all over the state. I first met him through the school nutrition program. His loss will be felt for many years to come. My condolences to his family and friends. He was a great (and funny) guy who will be greatly missed.

While Ray was certainly a compassionate human being, the thing i will miss the most was his sense of humor. He would leave these long winded messages on my work phone that i would save for a while just to listen to again and laugh.
My thoughts go out to his family.

In 1969 my brother and I were 2 of 11 children delivered from an abusive home in Hempstead NY and placed in a shelter in Mineola NY (Ray's hometown). After spending a year and a half there, both my brother and I were taken to the Susquehanna Valley Home. It is at this home that I would come to know and befriend one of the most caring philanthropists I know. But It wasn't with money or riches that Ray promoted the welfare of others, it was with God's love and guidance that he brought light to those around him - and I was one of the recipients of that light. I started working along side Ray at the age of 13, delivering food to each of the children's cottages at the Home. He would lead, instruct, teach, and mentor me, all in a fatherly and humorous way. Later, after graduating from college and moving back to Binghamton as an educator and child care worker, my students and I would volunteer at CHOW (The Community Hunger Outreach Warehouse) alongside Ray and his daughter, Karrie. Of course the apple didn't fall far from the tree. Working with Karrie was as if I was working alongside Mother Teresa. She is an amazingly warm, caring and selfless young lady. Ray and his wife have always welcomed my brother and I as their own - children from another mother with a slight darker tint. Funny, but Ray and Ann are two beautiful and lovely individuals. I can only imagine what the world would be like today if we had more loving and caring people like them. Well, I could go on, but I'd better start to close now. My name is Donald Dennison, no just kidding. It's Donald Cole, but a piece of his heart will forever be with me. Ray is a true representation of a father figure, friend, and a faithful man of God. Who would think that a kid without parental guidance and off the streets of New York. would grow up to be a God fearing man and a major contributor to his community and the world at large - Ray did! His faith in me was evident in his actions. I have three degrees, have won numerous awards in the community and have spent over 30 years working with youth. My life has made a complete circle with the help of Ray. I am now 62 and my wife and I have spent the past eleven years working at the Milton Hershey School as houseparents - leading, instructing, teaching, and mentoring with God's love and guidance. Sound familiar? Yes, it's amazing how one touch of God's love can affect the world. There is no greater gift than that of love - it's the gift that keeps on giving even in the absence of the giver. It's the only legacy worth leaving. In honor of a great Godly man who truly understood what it meant to serve, let it be said: "That service was the rent he paid for the space he occupied. The world is indeed a better place because he lived and demonstrated the love of God throughout his life. God's invisible imprint has been placed on the heart of everyone he touched - and I am one of many that gets to carry on the legacy of this amazing and unending love. Thanks Ray, for being God's servant of light. Your presence will be missed, but your love will remain in my heart forever!!! Love - Your Mentee and Brother in Christ - Donald A.Cole

My sincere condolences to Ray's family and co-workers. I have so many fond memories of Ray, while working in the school nutrition field. He always had a smile and was willing to help anyone, anytime. God took Ray to early, however he must have a special need for him. Indeed God has a gem. I looked up at a cloud and saw Ray smiling down, wanting us to help others.
To his family, his co-workers and the NYSNA, keep forging ahead for Ray -
Sincerely,
Anne B. Gennings

Several of us worked with Ray over the years and have great respect for all he accomplished and how he went about his work. He was committed, knowledgeable, and professional. He also always took time to be kind and inspire us with his optimism for what could be achieved. He will be missed but his legacy lives on in all the lives he touched through his compassionate life's work.

I am so sad to hear of this wonderful man’s passing. I send my condolences to the family. I met Ray many years ago when we were both food service directors. Though we were many miles apart, whenever we saw each other at conferences or meetings we would hang out and share stories about our programs and talk about life. You couldn’t help but see what a caring man he was and his passion to right the wrong. The world is a better place because of Ray. Thank you Ray for making us better advocates for child nutrition. Rest In Peace my friend, you will be missed.

Word of God: Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies.
Jesus: Come an eat.....
Ray: Hey, Jesus, can I help You with that? I have these heavenly, fresh vegetables we can do something with.....
Me: Thank you, good friend, mentor, colleague, fellow warrior, who interfered with the direction of my life in an awesome way.
I believe I'll see you again.....

I share my deepest and most sincere condolences. Ray was such an amazing person, in more ways than one. As one of the first people I met as part of my very first job, he will forever be part of why I loved my experience working with NYS agriculture and nutrition— the food policy council, our farm to school grants, presenting at conferences together, the farm to school coordinating committee— he taught me so much about it all, and in such a compassionate way. I loved all of our conversations and any opportunity to catch up. His kindness, passion, and generosity will never be forgotten. I will miss him dearly.♥️

Please accept my deepest condolences in this difficult time. Although I never met Ray Denniston, it seems that I know him well through Sean. I have always believed that it takes an amazing man to raise an amazing son - one who cares deeply about others, is always positive and uplifting, and sets an example of kindness and decency for all those around him. In that regard, I am certain that I do know Ray Denniston and that he was one special and incredible man. May he rest in peace knowing he left his mark upon this Earth and that his legacy lives on.
