Obituary of Edward L. Mahoney

Mahoney, Edward Long Edward Long Mahoney of Wilmington, NC, formerly of Vestal, died on Monday, August 26, 2013 in Reston, Virginia. He was surrounded by family and passed away peacefully after a long battle with dementia. Ed is survived by his wife, Patricia, of Wilmington; by four sons and their families: Michael and Dabney of Westport CT and their children Aisling, Nieve, Molly and Brendan, Bob and Mary Lou of Atlanta GA; Daniel and Reedy of Rockville MD and their children Megan, Kelly, Maureen and Quinn, and Kevin and Erin of Reston, VA and their children Caitlin, Ryan and Aidan; and by sister Claire MacDonald of Towson MD. He was predeceased by his wife of 46 years, Mary Ethel Leonard Mahoney; and his sister Maureen Daley. Ed was born on June 21, 1930 in Randolph, MA. Living in close proximity to Boston, Ed became an avid Red Sox fan, attending many games including Ted Williams's last game prior to serving in World War II. At the age of 9, along with a friend, Ed began printing a monthly newspaper for family and friends. He was honored with a banquet by the Boston Globe as the youngest editor in New England. After graduating from Boston College High School and earning his degree from Boston University, Ed served as a Lieutenant in the US Air Force in Johnson City and worked for Raytheon and, for over 30 years, General Electric. In 1993, he retired from GE and he and Mary Ethel moved to Wilmington, where the family had lived for three years in the 1970s. In Wilmington, Ed was an active volunteer. He was on the board of Good Shepherd Ministries and Wilmington East Rotary. He was active in Wilmington Men's Club, Civil War Roundtable, the New Hanover County Senior Center and several groups at Saint Mary Church. A Memorial Mass will be offered at St. Vincent dePaul Blessed Sacrament Church, Clubhouse Road Vestal Saturday at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City.
