Markovich, Samuel Binghamton: Samuel Markovich, 91, died Thursday, September 20, 2012 at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital with his family present. He was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Violet Markovich. He is survived by his devoted daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and John Kurcin, Binghamton; his grandchildren, John and Marta Kurcin, Chenango Forks, Jennifer and Frank Merlino, Endicott; his great-grandchildren, Julia Louise and Carly Jo Kurcin, Kimberly Violet Merlino; a sister-in-law, Joanne Beal, Simpson, PA; several nieces and nephews. He was a member of SS. Cyril & Methodius Church, Binghamton. Sam retired from the Binghamton School District, retiring from Woodrow Wilson School where he was affectionately known as "Mr. Sam". He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, a Prisoner of War and honored with the Bronze Star and other medals. He was a member of the American Legion and the V.F.W. Sam was a kind and gentle man. Funeral services will be held at the J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main Street, Binghamton, Monday at 12:30 p.m. and at 1 p.m. at SS. Cyril & Methodius Church, where a Funeral Mass will be offered. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. The family will receive friends at the McCormack Funeral Home, Sunday from 2-4 p.m. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Sam may be made to St. Cyril's Restore My Church Fund, 148 Clinton Street, Binghamton, NY 13905.
