Obituary of Miriam L. Payes

Miriam L. Payes, age 94, of Binghamton, passed away on July 5, 2013. She was predeceased by her husband of 45 years, Leon G. Payes M.D. Miriam was also predeceased by four of her brothers, Martin, Irwin, Edward, and Ira Davis. She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, William Payes M.D. and Patricia Payes of Vestal, Mitchell and Michele Payes of Germantown, TN, and Richard and Robin Payes of Rockville, MD. She had six grandchildren, Aaron Payes of Atlanta, GA, Adam Payes of Johnson City, Arielle Payes of Brookline, MA, Ben Payes, Dana Payes, Ari Payes, all of Rockville, MD. She is also survived by her brother, Lawrence Davis of Binghamton. She had many nephews and nieces mainly living in Binghamton and New Jersey, where Miriam was born. She volunteered and served in the US Army during WWII. She had been a member of Temple Israel and its sisterhood and was currently a member of Temple Concord. During the many years her husband practiced medicine, Miriam volunteered with the Lourdes Auxiliary. Miriam was a beloved mother and grandmother and contributed greatly to the life outcomes of her children and grandchildren. No matter what the need, Miriam was always there to help her children and grandchildren. Be it a happy event or a crisis you could always count on her (and Leon, her husband) to increase the joy of the event or help solve the crisis. The family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of James G. Johnston Memorial Nursing Home Star Unit for their loving care of Miriam. Funeral services will be held at Temple Concord, 9 Riverside Dr., Binghamton, Monday at 1 p.m. Rabbi Rachel Esserman will officiate. Burial will be in Temple Israel Riverside Cemetery, Conklin. The family will receive friends at Temple Concord Monday from 12 noon until 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in memory of Miriam may be made to Temple Concord.
