Obituary of Joseph B. Yudin

Please share a memory of Joseph to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Joseph Yudin died on July 7, 2016 at the age of 93 after a diagnosis of advanced lymphoma just 9 days before. Joseph was a member of the Binghamton Police Department for thirty-six years and over twenty of those years he served as member of the Detective Juvenile Division. An especially proud moment was when he learned that one of the juvenile delinquents he had arrested years before, chose Joseph to be the topic of his SUNY-Broome essay titled "Most Influential Person In Your Life". After graduation from Binghamton Central High School, Joe attended Binghamton University and Broome Tech. He also attended a seminar on Juvenile Delinquency at St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY. He was an avid bowler and golfer and was a member of the Binghamton Police Department bowling league for 20 years. In 1956 he bowled a near-perfect game of 290, which was very rare at the time. He was a former vicepresident and treasurer of the Binghamton Police Association. Joe served in the U.S. Navy Air Corps as a radio man and served with the Hedron Fleet Air Wing 12 that was based in Key West, Florida. He volunteered with Meals-on-Wheels as a driver and was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 206. He also volunteered at the bingo games where he sold the game "Share the Wealth". Joe was also a member of the American Legion Post 1645. Since 1953 Joe was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish (now the Parish of Saints John and Andrew) and a member of the Holy Name Society. Joe and his wife Mary, were people with a deep faith and shared a special devotion to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal. Joe was an avid believer in eating well and exercising. He loved, and believed it when people told him he would live to be a hundred. He attributed this possibility to doing 50 push-ups every other day, which he was still doing until the beginning of May. Even upon entering Mercy House he declined the offer of bacon for breakfast and asked for 1 % milk. Joseph was predeceased by his wife, Mary Lou who was his childhood sweetheart and best friend. Mary Lou died on September 16, 2013 after a marriage of 68 years. His brother Paul was a Sergeant in the Army and was killed on Iwo Jima. Joseph was also predeceased by his daughter Mary Ellen in 2010. Joseph is survived by his sister, Collette Grace, Syracuse, NY; his four daughters, Patricia Marla Yudin, Poestenkill, NY; Margaret (Joseph) Kalet, Princeville, HI; Colleen (Jim) Cowan, Sonoma, CA; and Kate Hutchison, San Francisco, CA, and Port Jefferson, NY. Joe is also survived by his grandchildren, Jude (Lisa) Kalet, Audrey Rossi, Jared Rossi, Rachel Cowan and Luke Hutchison, as well as many nieces and nephews, cherished friends and "family" at Good Shepard Village. The family would like to give special thanks to nurses, Linda and Mary on Lourdes 3 West and all the staff and volunteers at Mercy House who gave such loving care to our father. A Funeral Mass will be offered at the Church of Saints John and Andrew, Vestal Ave., Binghamton on Wednesday at 10:30am. Entombment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. The family will receive friends at the J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main St., Binghamton on Tuesday from 5-8pm. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Joe may be made to the Human Society, 2 Jackson St., Binghamton, NY 13903 or Toys for Tots, 38 Hawley St., Binghamton, NY 13901 or Mercy House of the Southern Tier, 212 N.
