Fred W. Stein, 84, of Binghamton died unexpectedly, Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at his home. He was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Amelia Wood Stein. He is survived by his children, Gary F. and Heidi Stein, Palm Harbor, FL, Frederic W. Stein III, Charlotte, NC, Vivian S. Stein, Charlottesville, VA; his grandchildren, Amelia Stein, Karl and Amy Stein, Daniel and Carrie Purdy, Rose Purdy; great-grandchildren, Kaleb Chandler Stein and sister, Madelyn Amelia. Stein; his former wife Helga F. Stein; his wonderful companion, Maryanne Samsel; sister, Barbara Bystrak and brother, Peter K. Stein. He was a member of Trinity Memorial Episcopal Church, Binghamton. He was a lifetime resident of the Binghamton area and a graduate of St. Lawrence University in 1954. From 1954-56 he was in the US Army 1st Lt. Military Police in Berlin, Germany where he was in charge of the Army Jail. He worked at ANSCO Div. of G.A.F. Corporation, New York State Electric Gas and was part owner of Century 21 Perkins, Stein and Stuart Realtors, Inc. He was involved in many community activities; former member of Board of Directors of Broome United Way, its General Campaign Chairman and its President; former member of NYS United Way Board of Directors; former member of Broome Co. YMCA and its President; member and Chairman of Broome County YMCA Foundation; former member and chairman of Upstate YMCA Cluster Executive Committee; former charter member of Board of Directors of United Health Services; former member and President of Board of Directors of Southern Tier Zoological Society; former member of Trinity Memorial Church Vestry. His club memberships include Binghamton Country Club, Binghamton YMCA Athletic Center and former member of the Binghamton Club. Fred loved being very involved in the YMCA and St. Lawrence University. Memorial Services will be held at Trinity Memorial Episcopal Church, 44 Main Street, Binghamton, Saturday at 1:00PM. Reverend Glenn Mahaffey, interim Rector, will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Towanda, PA at the convenience of the family.
